You can vote if you are 18 or older on 18 November, were registered in Hilversum or Wijdemeren on 5 October, and: have Dutch nationality, or; have the nationality of another country of the European Union, or; come from elsewhere and have lived legally in the Netherlands without interruption for at least five years.. So in municipal elections, many residents without a Dutch passport can vote too.

How to vote

On 18 November, the residents of Hilversum and Wijdemeren together elect the municipal council of the new municipality of Hilversum. You can vote at any polling station in either municipality. This is what you need.

Your voting pass (stempas)
Arrives by post between 26 and 30 October, at the address where you were registered on 5 October. The pass shows a polling station near your home, but you may also vote anywhere else in Hilversum or Wijdemeren.
Proof of identity
Passport, identity card, Dutch driving licence or Dutch residence document. It may have expired up to 5 years ago: if the ‘valid until’ date (geldig tot) is 19 November 2021 or later, it is fine.
Go to a polling station
Almost all polling stations are open from 7.30 am to 9 pm. The polling station in the hall of Hilversum railway station opens earlier, at 6 am according to the municipality.

Who can vote?

You can vote if you are 18 or older on 18 November, were registered in Hilversum or Wijdemeren on 5 October, and:

have Dutch nationality, or
have the nationality of another country of the European Union, or
come from elsewhere and have lived legally in the Netherlands without interruption for at least five years.

So in municipal elections, many residents without a Dutch passport can vote too.

Can’t vote yourself?

Then you can authorise someone else to vote for you (volmacht). There are two ways to do this.

With your voting pass

Fill in the back of your voting pass and sign it together with the person who will vote for you. Also give them a copy of your proof of identity. That person must also be allowed to vote in Hilversum or Wijdemeren, casts your vote at the same time as their own, and may vote for no more than two other people.

Written proxy (schriftelijke volmacht)

Useful if you cannot hand over your voting pass, or if you do not have valid proof of identity. You apply to the municipality; your application must arrive by Friday 13 November at the latest.

Lost your voting pass, or didn’t receive it?

Apply to the municipality for a replacement voting pass: in writing until Friday 13 November, or in person at the desk until Tuesday 17 November, 12 noon. Your old voting pass is then no longer valid. Has your proof of identity been stolen or lost? With a declaration of loss from the municipality and a card with your photo (for example a personal OV-chipkaart) you can still vote.

Voting with a disability

You may get help in the voting booth if a physical disability means you cannot vote on your own, for example if you are blind or partially sighted. Bring someone along or ask a member of the polling station staff.
Every polling station has a large-print list of candidates and a magnifying glass.
A sign language interpreter is available remotely via a QR code at the polling station; bring your phone.
Extra accessible polling station: Wijkcentrum Lopes Dias, Lopes Diaslaan 213 in Hilversum. With a voting template with audio, a speech-to-text interpreter and a host who can guide you.

Key dates

5 October: Nomination day. Your address on this day determines where you can vote.
9 October: The central electoral committee approves the lists of candidates and numbers them.
26–30 October: Your voting pass arrives by post.
9–13 November: The list of candidates arrives by post.
Friday 13 November: Last day to apply in writing for a replacement voting pass or a written proxy.
Tuesday 17 November, 12 noon: Last moment to collect a replacement voting pass at the desk.
Wednesday 18 November: Election day. Polling stations open from 7.30 am to 9 pm. From 10 pm, results evening at the town hall.
19 November: Votes per candidate are counted at the De Fuik sports hall in Kortenhoef (open to the public, from 9 am).
20 November: The municipality announces the provisional result.
26 November, 10 am: The central electoral committee determines the official result at the town hall (open to the public).
4 January 2027: The new council members are sworn in.
